*”Edith Grove-London SW10″ – scene of the Rolling Stones first photo shoot !!!

Posted on November 24, 2023 by Geoff Clements Posted in Music, Music 'Then & Now', Streets .

My ‘London Shoes’ have been off the road for over a month, due to a bit of a health issue – but although still not 100% chipper, it was good to step out this week and get back on the old blog treadmill – even if it was for just a couple of ‘quickie’ blog topics, where I was in & out like a fiddler’s elbow – not hanging around too long in the cold.

Both blog topics were located almost next door to each other – both are related to music – and I’ve presented both of them from a sort of ‘then & now’ perspective.

So – the 1st of this duo of articles is all about the very first promo photo session done by the legendary Rolling Stones – which took place on 4th May 1963 – some 60yrs ago!!!!!

The Stones, as we know them today, had formed in May 1962 – when guitarist, the late ‘Brian Jones’ – already a ‘face’ on the emerging London jazz/blues scene – put an advertisement in Jazz Weekly, for new members to form a band – and, from the outcome of that ad – the Rolling Stones were formed.

One year later, with an official settled line-up of Brian Jones / Mick Jagger / Keith Richards / Charlie Watts / Bill Wyman – and with new manager Andrew Loog Oldham, calling the shots and making things happen – their very first official photo shoot was arranged.

Celebrity photographer of the day ‘Phillip Townsend’-was commissioned by the Stones manager, to do the shoot – and for the backdrop he chose some streets that were familiar to him in the Chelsea district of London.

At that time, Brian Jones – Mick Jagger & Keith Richards were living in a dingy dirty flat within an early 1800’s built terraced house at no.102 Edith Grove–London SW10.

Both Charlie Watt’s and Bill Wyman, the Stones drummer and bass guitarist, were often in attendance at the 102 Edith Grove flat, for band meetings and rehearsals etc – but Watts and Wyman were sensible enough never to stay over – deliberately distancing themselves from the chaos and squalor, that Jones/Jagger/Richards were living in.

It was probably only fitting therefore that the very first Stones promo photo should be taken outside 102 Edith Grove.

For the photo – 5 very young, clean-cut and smartly dressed Stones sat down next to each other in a line, in the middle of the Edith Grove road tarmac – with 102 in the background.

Now – clearly there couldn’t have been much traffic around on the day of the photo shoot 60yrs ago – because when I was there, there was a constant stream of traffic both ways – and it took me 5mins to cross from one side of Edith Grove to the other – but I guess those were different times.

Edith Grove looks a bit grim in the original 1963 promo photo – and its fair to say that it looks as grim today as it did then (in my opinion). However, it would still cost you an arm & a leg to buy one of its houses or flats/apartments – we are talking £millions.

So – having done the first photo of the 1963 shoot, the photographer drove the Stones around the Chelsea streets surrounding Edith Grove – stopping off at a number of locations deemed suitable as a backdrop for the band to ‘strike a pose’ – one being the popular ‘Australian Pub’ in Milner Street.

The Australian Pub closed in the 1980’s, but the old pub building is still in situ, and is a high-end retail shop these days.

So – having travelled over to Fulham Broadway tube station, in my quest to track down Edith Grove – retracing the footsteps of the Stones some 60yrs earlier, and taking a few ‘Then & Now’ photos – it was time for a little liquid refreshment, before heading off back home – and I found myself in some Egyptian café just around the corner from Fulham Broadway tube station – where I enjoyed a nice cup of some sort of tea (medication dictates I have to be alcohol free at the mo) plus a slice of cake.

With Shoes having been off the road for a month, this was a nice little blog to get stuck into and knock out – hopefully more in-depth material will follow over the coming weeks.

Hope you enjoyed this little story.

A few years back I visited the Rolling Stones experience (or whatever it was called) that ended up touring the world where it commenced in Chelsea.
They recreated that filthy flat and all I could think of is thank God they didn’t use ‘smell-o-vision’ it would have knocked us all out!
    Brilliant exhibition!

Good on ya Cobber for getting out and about and sharing some interesting stories. I’m from Melbourne, Australia with an English ancestry. Got to get over there sometime in my life and check out places like this. The Stones were a big influence on me and my mates when we were lads in the late 1980’s, I’m 50 this year, how time flies! I had a Stones cover/ blues band together with my older brother and and a few high school mates back then, we called the band ‘The Aftermath’ after one of their records. I used to love playing ‘Jumpin Jack Flash’ with my band. I’ll send you a photo of us from when we were in a local rag if I can find it in my old box of memories. Cheers mate.

The picture of the Stones is not outside 102. It is in fact outside 92 !

It was really that bad inside? Still, it must have been thrilling to see the recreation! Wish I’d known about the Rolling Stone Experience, would have liked to have tried to see it. Do you know how long ago it was made or shown?

It’s a rather romantic vision to think of the three main Stones living in a flophouse when they were first on the scene. Kind of difficult to picture Mick and Brian living there.

They are also not sitting in Edith Grove. They were sitting in a street around the corner called Bifron Street demolished in the late 1960’s. One of many slum streets demolished to make way for then new Worlds End Estate.

Yes it was a much quieter road in the early 60’s before they changed the traffic layout. I used to come down from the North with my parents to see my gran who lived in number 99, directly opposite the Stones, and I remember her saying they were “nice lads”.

I lived in Cremorne Rd, round the corner from Edith Grove and remember the Stones living there. A friends sister used to go and wash their hair. It was an exciting time to live in Chelsea with lots of stars living in nearby streets. There were also lots of films being made on the house boats on Chelsea Reach and along the Kings Road. I was born in the house I lived in, in 1948, until it was compulsorily purchased in 1968, when we were moved to a council flat. Great memories

I happened across your blog and greatly enjoyed it, as I made a similar trek across the pond, some 30 or 40 years ago, in order to see Edith Grove. I don’t recall finding the exact apartment, as I did not know it, but I was a huge fan and wanted to be a female rock n roller like the Stones, which necessitated a visit to their original home base.

Thank you for putting this out on your blog, and may it help newer Stones fans find their way to music’s great white way.

The Stones were not actually sitting in Edith Grove although it looks like it.
The photo was taken in Bifron Street around the corner from Edith Grove.
Bifron Street was one of many streets demolished in the late 1960’s to make way for The World’s End Estate.
They are also not sitting outside number 102 as can be evidenced in the photo.
You may want to update your Post.

Not Edith Grove. The photo was taken with them sitting outside 90-92 Bifron Street which ran opposite but horizontal to 102 Edith Grove.
Bifron Street was one of about 10 streets that were demolished in 1969 to make way for The Worlds End Estate.
