*”The World Reimagined-Globes”-National Maritime Museum Grounds-Greenwich

Posted on August 16, 2023 by Geoff Clements Posted in Art, Parks & Public Squares, People, Street Art .

This is a short and sweet Shoes blog – totally unplanned with no pre-visit research, but in my opinion the subject matter is worthy of publication on my London Shoes social media feeds.

Earlier this week I visited The Cutty Sark with my 2 daughters and 3 grandkids – and a very enjoyable day it was too.

On the way to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park – we wandered through the grounds of the National Maritime Museum – and its what is on display in the grounds of the Museum, that is the subject matter of this blog article.

On display on the lawns outside the Maritime Museum throughout the whole of this summer – are 36 giant ‘globes’.

These globes represent a concept entitled: -…“The World Reimagined”

The “World Reimagined” concept is designed to change awareness and understanding of the transatlantic slave trade – and its impact today on everything and everyone – and its intention is to make racial justice a reality.

Each of these 36 globe’s is adorned with its own unique artwork, that has been created by some of the top internationally renowned artists – along with some of the lesser known ones, plus other emerging talents.

The ‘Reimagined’ theme is to explore the world “as it is” and the world “as it could be”.

It has been long debated that Britain’s involvement in the slave trade, and how its once mighty empire was built off the back of it – is not always accurately portrayed in history books – and therefore one of the intentions of this exhibition is to help raise awareness of such matters.

Each globe explores different themes – themes that include slavery / emancipation / community and racial injustices – and the intention of the artwork is to provide a future vision of how things could potentially be.

The arrival of these globes, and their stay throughout this summer – means that they will be there for “World Ocean’s Day” – and the “75th ‘Windrush’ Anniversary”.

Anyway – whatever people’s personal views may be, I felt that these unique and magnificent pieces of artwork deserve a London Shoes blog recognition.

As I’ve said above – the globes will be on display until the end of summer – so you’ve still got time to pop along and enjoy them, should you find yourself down Greenwich way – well worth seeing in my opinion.

Hope you enjoy the accompanying photos.

Your blogs normally give us an interesting slice of London history so it’s an extra delight to learn about something contemporary and different. Thanks for providing a great idea for a Bank Holiday visit with grandchildren!

      Hi Jeff,

As always – thank you so much for your kind and positive feedback – it is very much appreciated.

Yes – the ‘Globes’ are definitely worth a gander – I’m sure your grandkids will enjoy exploring all 36 of them.

Another ‘exploration’ topic you may want to consider for them, are the ‘Gorillas’ of Covent Garden. Loads of colourful Gorilla statues are currently scattered around a small area of Covent Garden – my grandkids really enjoyed trying to hunt them down!!

      Kind regards

Interesting. Thanks for the Freddie Mercury info last week too. I didn’t know the exhibition was on so I’ll definitely go to that.
